Message from the Chair
Friends of UH CHBE,
Welcome to the UH Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department website! I hope that you learn more about UH CHBE as you peruse the site.
During the Spring of 2013, I returned as Chair of the department. I am delighted to be back, having served as Chair from 2000-2008. I follow the very successful leadership of Ramanan Krishnamoorti, who moved to a new position at UH as “Chief Energy Officer”. Fortunately, Ramanan will continue to carry out ground breaking research in polymeric materials.
By all accounts, UH CHBE is doing very well. Our National Research Council (NRC) ranking puts the UH CHBE dept. at about 15th nationally out of 100+ departments. Our goal is to get into the top 10. The department numbers nearly 20 full-time faculty and 90 doctoral students, covering a diversity of research areas. This is the largest UH CHBE has ever been, and we expect to grow more in the coming few years! We have a group of outstanding junior faculty members who are doing great things. Indeed, Gila Stein, Jeff Rimer, Jaci Conrad, Megan Robertson, Navin Varadarajan, and Lars Grabow are the future faces of the department. Their hiring and the hiring of other experienced faculty (Pat Cirino and Bill Epling) has strengthened the traditional department core competency in reaction engineering & catalysis, as well as making significant gains in biomolecular engineering and materials engineering.
The Petroleum Engineering program is a vibrant part of the CHBE Department, under the capable leadership of Tom Holley. UH PETR had its first cohort of 20 B.S. graduates in May. The program now has over 400 students! We will be adding several faculty members to the PETR program in the coming couple of years to meet the incredible demand and to confront the many exciting challenges of the natural gas revolution in the United States.
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at upcoming departmental, college, and university events!
